Revista Replicante: cultural criticism and digital journalism

History and vision of a new magazine

Replicante was born as a quarterly print magazine and was published from 2004 to 2009, with a total of twenty-one issues. During that first stage, thanks to the quality of our content and national distribution, we were able to attract a significant number of readers all over Mexico. Beginning with its first edition, Replicante has characterized itself for being open, horizontal, promiscuous, politically incorrect, and inadequate for all sorts of fundamentalists. Since its inception, it has included new and well-known authors and has dealt with countless manifestations of contemporary culture. It has served as a showcase and point of encounter for artists, writers and journalists intent in creating new ways of seeing and conceiving the world, and is aimed at a transgenerational, critical, and informed public: those who have not let themselves be seduced by the hysteria and rush of consumer culture, as well as those who can read images. Towards the end of 2009, the recession cost us some key sponsors and we chose to move online, a task we did with enthusiasm, curiosity and some trepidation, thus following an irreversible global trend.

When a print magazine migrates online, it has to reconsider its editorial policy, not so much in terms of content, but in terms of how it will transmit information and conceive of the act of reading. Despite the fact that written word is the ideal vehicle for literature, there exist other formats that allow us to approach it and perhaps even understand it better. Thus, the flexibility of an online platform allows a magazine like Replicante to fulfill a double function as a magazine and a discussion forum. Beyond that, the digital world demands other strategies for managing information and generates new forms of readership. We now appear each month and have published thirty issues; morevoer, our subjects are current and have no expiration date: science, art, democracy, education, drugs, comics, journalism, humor, economy, counterculture, erotica, television, film, madness, the future of the Internet, and the music industry are some of the themes that we have dealt with. Our sections include essays, columns, reviews, photogalleries, chronicles, podcasts, a humor supplement, and a section featuring editorial previews, among others.

We currently have the possibility to continue to explore distinct orbits of thought via other formats. Mexican cultural media have hesitated at the time of shifting to the web. Replicante's wager has been complete, and it has commited to sound and audiovisual production to the same degree that it has to  written ideas. We seek to transform ourselves into a multimedia project that allows us to continue to dialogue with our readers and to reflect on our realities.

Our collaborators

In this new version of Replicante, just as in its earlier phase, you can read texts by respected academics and famous writers, as well as by talented young writers with good ideas; philosophical texts, journalistic accounts, literary and film criticism, essays about new media and the new forms art now takes: comics, video, television, music, design and everything related to the Internet and the use of other technologies. We now have a sizeable roster of collaborators in Latin America and elsewhere around the world; when we were in print we had over one thousand writers and during these first three years online we have added many more. We have also published some of the most important thinkers our country has produced in the last decades: Roger Bartra, Luis González de Alba, Manuel De Landa and Naief Yehya, to name a few. We have also published a text by a writer nominated for the Nobel prize, Javier Marías and one by a recent winner, Mario Vargas Llosa. Additionally, each edition includes writings by leading journalists from Mexico and Latin America: Héctor Villarreal, Carlos Velázquez, Juan Mascardi, Mercedes Álvarez, Avelina Lésper, Rafael Toriz, Fernanda Melchor, Alberto Chimal, Eduardo Huchín, and many more. All of them have different origins, beliefs and specialties, thus creating a fine, fresh and colorful magazine.

Why do we need your support?

Replicante was recognized by one of Spain's leading newspapers, El País, as one of the best cultural magazines in Spanish. We have published three texts that have won national prizes in journalism. We count with an average of 200 thousand visitors per month and thousands of followers on Twitter and Facebook. Unfortunately, the virtual market is very different from the print one, and paid advertising follows different rules; advertisers don't care about content, they care about the number of clicks a page receives. Thus, it is impossible for us to compete with websites that publish pieces on sports, celebrity gossip or erotic pictures of women. In the past, the magazine had a price; we have now published thirty free issues containing an average of seventy diverse texts each. This fact, coupled with the loss of our generous benefactor, who supported the magazine since its birth, have placed our editorial project in a state of risk. This is why we are reaching out to you. To support us is to support the work of hundreds of thinkers in Mexico, Latin America and the Spanish-speaking world. And above all, it is to resist the Internet's inertia, to encourage and link artists, writers and journalists whose often opposing ideas are always critical and independent. We want to keep making a magazine that challenges the reader and conceives him as an intelligent partner. We want to keep supporting the dissemination of free information and thought in a country and a world that seeks improved ways of interaction. Thank you.
