Café de la Aldea is a pilot project of a triple bottom-line business model for small coffee farmers to grow, roast and sell single-origin Colombian coffee.   The usual coffee business model

The usual coffee business has a long value chain that starts with the farmer who grows the coffee and continues with up to 4 intermediate actors before it reaches the consumer. As a result, farmers usually receive a very small share of the price that consumers pay for coffee, while they have to handle the biggest risks. This leaves them vulnerable and often makes their side of the business unprofitable.

The Café de la Aldea business model

In the farm-to-cup model we want to develop, the farmer adds all the value to their coffee and captures its entire value chain. The farmer takes his coffee all the way from his farm to the cup of the person who drinks it.     What are the three “bottom-lines” that this model offers?   1.       Financial stability and sustainability International coffee prices vary a lot, and they sometimes drop below even the price that Colombian farmers need for their farms to subsist. In the Café de la Aldea model, the farmer receives every penny the consumer pays. This allows him to get a MUCH higher and stable price.     2.                  Social responsibility Almost 90% of workers in rural Colombia are informal, so they seldom have access to the pension, health and insurance systems. Our business model entails paying our workers a fair wage, including social security. This is feasible because we receive higher returns for our workers’ work.   3.                  Environment-friendly Among others, we use water-saving practices, we clean the little water we use through natural mechanisms and our packaging is both recycled and biodegradable. Again, the cost this entails is affordable because we will collect revenues that would otherwise go to exporters or roasters.   A short word on Tradition The idea of Café de la Aldea came up because, as a family, we want to continue the coffee legacy of our grandparents, but can only do so if we find a way to make it sustainable. As Colombia grows more urbanized and the average coffee farmer reaches 56 years old, this has become an issue of national relevance. To continue with an essential tradition of Colombia’s DNA, we need to find ways to attract young people into coffee growing by making it profitable again.     Our immediate (financial) hurdles are raising the quality of our coffee for it to be delicious, pay for the development of our brand and formally register Cafe de la Aldea as a business.   A quantum-leap in quality The difference in quality needed to sell coffee in parchment and the one required for it to taste delicious when roasted is abysmal. Making that leap involves a number of investments.   ·         First, we need to train our workers in agricultural and environmental best-practices, shifting their focus from quantity to  quality. Old habits die hard, and this is tougher (and costlier) than it sounds. ·         Secondly, we need a costly measuring tool for our dry parchment to have a humidity level between 10 and 12%. One percent below ruins the taste, while one percent above won’t allow us to storage it in order to always sell our coffee freshly-roasted. ·         Thirdly, to make sure all our coffee dries up homogeneously (we can’t have some beans at 11% humidity while others at 13%), we need to build a plastic greenhouse-type drying area, to prevent any rain from falling on our coffee.     Brand development To compete in the roasted coffee market and build a stable customer base, it is not enough for our coffee to taste good. It also has to be packed in attractive little bags with a logo that conveys the values Cafe de la Aldea stands for. We need promotional info to tell customers about the social and environmental value behind the coffee their buying and raise awareness towards the issues we are trying to address. Our friends Clarita and Pablo helped us with our  logo and promotional video, but we need to pay them for their amazing work (A symbolic amount considering the time and effort they’ve invested).     Company registration Finally, we need money for all the complex and costly red tape needed to open and register a business in Colombia. In a country with such low business formality, we believe that Cafe de la Aldea must be part of the country’s social contract by abiding to the rules, creating formal jobs and paying taxes.   Once we can show a successful case study of our business model (Café de la Aldea, that is) we are confident there will be farmers willing to try the model, investors willing to fund it and authorities willing to promote it.

If we don't reach the 100% of the funding goal, we will use it to do the following:

  • With the 10%

We will train our workers in agricultural and environmental best-practices as much as possible. We will only be able to roast the coffee that ends up being correctly and homogeneously dried, but a start is a start!

  • With the 25%

We will train our workers in agricultural and environmental best-practices as much as possible and pay Clarita and Pablo for their awesome work with the logo and video with a small amount. We will only be able to roast the coffee that ends up being correctly and homogeneously dried, but a start is a start!

  • With the 50%

We will train our workers in agricultural and environmental best-practices, build the greenhouse-type drying area to achieve a homogeneity in the coffee drying process, and pay Clarita and Pablo for their awesome work with the logo and video.

  • With the 75%

We will train our workers in agricultural and environmental best-practices, build the greenhouse-type drying area to achieve homogeneity in the coffee drying process, buy the humidity measuring machine to be able to know the exact humidity of our coffee (and thus know the optimal moment for drymilling and roasting!), and pay Clarita and Pablo for their awesome work with the logo and video.
