The Transparent House group is born in 2012 in order to spread and highlight the work of the artist Osvaldo “Gitano” Rodríguez. The effort has been centered, through multiple initiatives, in making public the diversity of his work. Most of it is related to the historic, cultural and social context of Valparaiso, the Chilean port declared by Unesco as Cultural Heritage.

Among Gitano’s most profound works is the “Transparent House”, an artistic-architectural project he developed during his exile, after the military coup in Chile in 1973. From the hills of the port city, the artist draw imaginary lines towards the bay, creating with melancholy, estrangement, memory and dreams a submerged house.

Continuing these imaginary lines, we have set the challenge of taking to real dimension what Gitano dreamed from afar and build this house at the bottom of the bay, making it emerge for its sighting. Using the light as a building material and also as a vehicle of civic activation, our aim with the projection of the Transparent House is to connect past with present, generating a collective reflection about the cultural, social, political and economic context that marks the future and what will become of Valparaiso. That is how lighting sources will be installed in boats guided by fishermen at different points of the bay, that will draw parts of the imaginary house rising up over the sea, to be seen by the inhabitants from the amphitheater city.

To get to this artistic intervention, we have gone through a road flooded by ideas, dreams, reflections, conversations, urban interventions in the hills and explorations, together with the many technical tests and a heavy production work on site. In this journey fishermen, architects, lightning technology experts, artists, professionals and technicians of different disciplines, representatives of educational institutions and from public and private organizations have contributed, together with many more citizens, all of them who are part of the building team of the Transparent House.

From the economic-financing point of view, various funding sources will be articulated: contributions from the Transparent House team, from public and private institutions, together with the support of inhabitants from the Earth, will bring to reality what we have imagined. The collected resources in this campaign will be destined to finance technical requirements (renting high power lighting equipment, electric materials, renting boats) as well as logistics, production and dissemination of the event.

Our aim is to create a collective event in Valparaíso, Gitano’s hometown, the one he missed and imagined from exile. The call is to participate in this process where light will provoke taking our eyes to the sea, so to recover the meaning of the city, projecting a future from then on through reconstructing the memory.
