REUSABLE BEACH ECO-ASHTRAY
- 11 backers
According to the Ocean Conservancy and several scientific studies, cigarette butts are the main type of litter found on beaches worldwide. Due to their incredible ability to concentrate chemicals, the butts, which are made of non-biodegradable cellulose, are considered a great threat to aquatic life as well as to beach tourism, and are visually unpleasant.
Studies have shown that many small aquatic animals frequently confuse cigarette butts for food and ingest them on a regular basis. Unfortunately, due to their inability to break down the chemical-laden cellulose contained in the butts, these remain in the animal’s digestive tract. These chemicals are gradually released into the animals' system, leading most of the time to their death. It has been demonstrated that some small fishes may perish within 72 hours after ingesting the butts.
The Eco-Ashtrays and Stations provide the perfect solution for beach cigarette butt pollution, since they are:
Easy to use
Available 24 hours a day at beach access points
Used cigarette filters are unsightly and contain toxins, which can cause damage and harm to living organisms that may ingest them.
The proposed project will help beautify our beaches, reduce beach pollution caused by cigarette butts, reduce harm to the natural environment and wildlife, and increase environmental awareness / stewardship, thus supporting the City of Miami Beach's vision, which aims to be “Cleaner, Safer, Beautiful and Vibrant”.
Eco-Ashtrays & Stations can alleviate this issue. The grant being requested will fund the production of 40 Stations + 40,000 Eco-Ashtrays. Thirty five (35) Stations, along with 1000 Eco-Ashtrays each, will be donated to the City of Miami Beach to be placed at dune crosswalks from South Pointe to 15th Street. Four (4) Stations will be donated to the Boucher Brothers, along with 1000 Eco-Ashtrays each, to be placed at 4 of their beach cabanas (locations to be determined by the Boucher Brothers). One Station will be kept by applicants for future promotion purposes.
Each Station will consist of: a supporting pole, an aluminum plaque guiding smokers on how to use the Eco-Ashtrays, ashtray dispensing unit, a butt trashcan, and re-usable Eco-Ashtrays.
Each plaque will say:
Don't leave your butt on the beach! Use the ECO-ASHTRAY - the reusable beach ashtray
Take one to the sand
Fill it with sand to extinguish your cigarettes
On your way out, drain the sand through the bottom and “dump” the butts into the container below
