DIOGENES PROJECT it´s transdisciplinary approach involving theater, dance, music, scenography, industrial design and costume desing usign the Diogenes disorder as a metaphor. We´re on board a scenic and poetic drift that, this time, has come ashore in this intervention called Diogenes in the sun.
We´ve collected tones of garbage, meters of paper, moved furniture and junk from one city end to the other, talk to urban recyclers, junk metal dealers, and gathered cluster people and more people to take over this space.
Diogenes takes the object out from its everyday context and by preserving it, he enthrones it, he metaphorizes it. In this sense he operates like the artist: he points out, intervine and stops the flow of things through the world. Thus, this performatic installation grows, amplifies and rebuilds itself to, afterwards, recycle itself, disolve and return to the garbage circuit thanks to the urban recyclers co-ops working with the project. Now more than ever in the history of mankind we live in a world where the importance of the objects that surround us has become as big as the nature that created us. Diogenes Project will continue growing, taking the garbage out its quiet dens and into the sun to create new artificials universes. In the end, it will continue its course, since it´s every thing destiny to become junk.
DIOGENES SYNDROME, also known as Compulsive Hoarding Disorder, is a malaise often associated with elderly people living alone. Is tipically characterized by a complete personal and social abandonment, home isolation and the compulsive hoarding of garbage and domestic junk. This syndrome takes its name after Diogenes of Sinope, a Greek philosopher belonging to the Cinic school who, paradoxically, spreaded austerity and detachment.
This syndrome is suffered for thousand of people around the world and it´s much more common than it´s usually believed. The compulsion to hoard, keep and tresasure, leads the hoarder to live inside true animals lairs that grow using the structure of the house as a skeleton. Every Diogenes home share an “air familier”: garbage mountains up to the ceiling, meandering rat-like paths piercing the piles of junk and debris, and bodies mingled among the objects and furniture.
