¿What is Machitún?
Machitún is an artistic project for social integration, aiming to put an end to social fragmentation by creating a high profile show which includes several disciplines and artists coming both from poverty-stricken neighborhoods as well as other areas of the city.
In conjunction with Proyecto 34°S, the first experience of Machitún became a reality in 2011 during South Africa’s National Art Festival. Local professional artists and foundations that work with children living in poverty came together to create a professionally produced show that closed the biggest artistic festival in Africa. Among those artists sharing knowledge and love of their craft during the workshops and rehearsals were musicians, actors, acrobats, dancers, stilt walkers, stage designers, and wardrobe artists.
In 2012, Machitún has a new destination: barrio La Cava, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The day long festival is scheduled for October 12th.
We will celebrate cultural and artistic exchange, together with the inauguration of a sports ground and a playground built by San Isidro’s town council. In addition, we will restore a 400 meter corridor which links the Cultural Center Crear Vale La Pena, who are the founding allies and are supplying a large portion of the artistic cast for the event.
Everyone is invited to visit the controversial neighborhood of La Cava. Doors will be open for free access to share this great integration goal.
This is going to be the first instance of a project that will be carried out in many marginal neighborhoods; in Buenos Aires and all over Argentina.
¿Who are we?
We are a group of artists determined to create something that works as a seed for a different reality. We are committed to build a reality full of art in the streets, art that does not discriminate. We invite anyone who feels the same to join us!
Our group is currently composed of 25 people that want to participate in this beautiful project. Members include musicians, actors, acrobats, dancers, stilt walkers, stage designers, wardrobe artists, producers, directors, 3d animators, photographers, and sound technicians.
¿What do we need to make Machitún happen?
We need all kinds of help, be it artistic, production, or monetary contributions. The project is open to anybody who wants to join or has the means to contribute. The Foundation Crear Vale La Pena and the Centro Cultural Comunitario Puertas al Arte will provide spaces for rehearsals and contacts with the people from the neighborhood.
Even then, we need money for show production, set design, costumes, travel expenses, transport, catering, and other show related expenses. The amount we solicited through idea.me is just a percentage of the total cost of the project. This amount is allotted mainly to the inclusion of artists from the neighborhood in the show and the professionals who allow us to create a top level production. Funds for other expenses (lights, stage, live sound equipment, etc.) will be through foundation or company sponsorship or lends.
We would love you to join us with whatever you feel you can contribute!
We expect to count on your collaboration so that Machitún can continue to form and include more youth from La Cava and professional artists from everywhere!
By spreading the word about the show, through your social networks or among your acquaintances, Machitún will achieve a bigger participation from other people. Everything counts.
